Once Micah was able to get around again—and despite Raine’s orders to stay in bed—he spent the day closed up in Liam’s office, reading the document that had started everything.

As promised, a new version had arrived at the castle while he was laid up. He compared the two, recognizing similar passages, the style that marked the author. Whoever wrote the first document had also written this one, which meant that the leader was still alive.

Micah had hoped Joseph had been behind it, that his death had taken away the worst of the threat. This document shredded his hope.

It also angered him, a deep, simmering anger he had never felt before. What these fools wanted was impossible—it would create chaos in Palamar. Part of him suspected that was exactly what their leader wanted.

Ari joined him late in the afternoon, reading the sections Micah had marked for him on the first document. Once he had worked his way through several pages, he set them down.

“This was written by someone with an intimate knowledge of government—and the knowledge to know how to topple it.”

“I thought the same,” Micah said. He handed over the latest. “I also thought that Joseph and Elena had been behind the creation of it, until I read this.”

Ari read the new document, his eyes narrowing as he made his way through it. By the final page he was cursing.

“They mean to overthrow anything resembling government. Even Elena would have known better.”

Micah nodded. “I need a confidante, Ari. I have someone in mind, but I want you to check him out first. Use the network Liam started before he—” It still hurt too much to speak the words. “I can’t do this alone anymore.”

Ari crossed his arms, studying Micah for an endless minute before he finally nodded. “Who?”

“Jared Faller.”

Ari did not look surprised. “He’s a good man, with a reputation for honesty. I’ll have him checked out for you. I wouldn’t trust the rest of the council, not even with a secret evening menu.”

Micah smiled, some of his grief easing. “I will never make that error.”

“Good.” Ari stood, and sketched a bow. “I will have the results for you soon, my lord Duke.”

“Thank you.”

He watched Ari leave, and let out a sigh. The advisors that made up his council meant well, but, like Ari, he didn’t trust them. They still saw him as Liam’s little brother, the second son. Ari listened to him, wasn’t afraid to tell him when he was stupid for even thinking of doing something, and helped keep him grounded.

The information network had a solid start, thanks to Liam. But Micah needed more; with his disability, he was unable to see and hear as much as he wanted. It was time to step up, to step into the role he had taken on for Liam.

It was time to be the Duke of Palamar, and start making a difference.
